Feathered Friends of Dereth

In Dereth, one of the most overlooked yet rewarding hobbies around is that of bird-watching. It's a shame, because this is a great passtime for newb and uber alike. Birds are colorful, interesting to watch, and refreshingly non-aggressive. Getting started in bird watching or "birding" does not require a lot of specialized equipment, just a good dose of patience.

There is only one confirmed species of bird in Dereth, a colorful red and black fellow with a wingspan about the length of a tumerok's foot. Possibly the only species to survive the devastation, they have also thrived in the relative competition vacuum, spreading across multiple continents. It is possible that as birding becomes more popular, more species will be discovered.

Getting Started
The best way to get started birding is to go with someone who has already been doing it for a while. If you have friends that bird, ask them where the best viewpoints can be found.

Even if you are the first bird-watcher in your town, it's really not that hard to do. When you are outdoors, especially in hilly areas, keep an eye out for birds. You will most likely see them swooping around the sky in a relatively fixed location (most likely drawn there by a swarm of newly hatched insects). Observe their flight pattern, and soon you may see consistent spots where the bird comes quite close to the ground. Approach these spots slowly and quietly, and you should be able to observe them in very close proximity.

It may surprise you that these common songbirds are actually related to the much larger Darkenfowl (which are a mutated version of birds that resulted from the Black Breath).
